It works in my FF3, but then I launched the link from my newsreader, not 
from the discussion group web page, so there's no referrer.

I guess the same sort of thing is going on as happens when you omit the 
key when you load the API code and get the NAVTEQ tiles instead of 
TeleAtlas. The server treats a valid keyless request in the same way 
that it treats one from maps.google.com. The server treats a request 
with a key as if it came from the API.
