The technique on that thread tells you something different. If you look 
at the examples, they're from the UK. The geocodings differ but 
maps.google.com and the API display the same tile images in the UK.


One thing you could do is maintain a list of countries in which the 
maps.google.com imagery differs from the API imagery, since image 
provider licensing agreements are per country. Reverse geocode your 
location, and if it's in the USA, Canada or Israel, plus any other 
countries you know about, then the maps differ.
