Make sure it isn't already a request http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/list and add it. It might be useful to expand your request so that the order of metric/ other units can be defined. That way users in the UK could get km on top of miles (or nautical miles, or leagues, or whatever). If you make it as flexible as your last sentence implies, I can see that there may be issues with subordinate units (yards/feet/whatever) and it would be a good idea to define the scale control's processing as closely as possible in your feature request.
