Sounds like it is somehow adding the overlay image multiple times? I ran into a problem with a custom overlay (gridlines) a while back and dicovered that .redraw() gets fired much more often than you might think, and coud be re-entrant - a second redraw() may be called before a first one is finished. In that case I simplified the .redraw() to do nothing, and instead called a custom equivalent only on map zoomend or movend events.
