It sounds like you might be doing something like this
    http://econym.googlepages.com/temp_charityWalk.htm
which was set up for a Canadian charity walk. Lots of different people
did different amounts of walking in different places, and the idea was
for the whole thing to add up to the equivalent of walking across
Canada. Enter a number into the box at the bottom (numbers between 1000
and 4000 are sensible) and it plots how much has been done so far.

It works by first using GDirections to calculate the polyline for the
whole route, but doesn't display it. When the user enters a number, it
uses poly.GetPointAtDistance() from EPoly.js to find the point that far
along the route. Finally, it uses GDirections to plot the route from the
start to that point.

Change the map.setCenter() and use
    dirn1.load("from: Lands End Cornwall to: John O Groats");
or whatever the equivalent is for "USA Coast to Coast".

For "round the UK coastline" and "round the world" you'd need to find a
different way to generate the underlying polyline, because GDirections
won't handle that.
