Can you point to where it's documented? Only documented methods are supported. It looks like you stumbled on a method of getting encoded polylines on static maps. This is a requested enhancement: http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=205 You can get unencoded lines drawn on static maps already, of course.
