I changed the path for the two KMLs (county boundary & natural areas fill) back to the google page and they now show up on the map. In summary, the KMLs only appear when being served from googlepages, but not locally. I guess that means there's still something not right with the MIME settings...I think.
I wonder if having the correct vml namespace be the fix? I'll try and see.
