Yesterday at Google Developer Day (Wembley, London) they had the 'Google Phone' with maps using a smaller tile sizes http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=nmniBnVB6wA (jump to 2.25 to see maps on the device - also in high quality)
256x256/4 = 64px (using quadtree) so I was told.
