well the reason it felt relevant was because there's nothing wrong
with the PHP script itself.

it can download any other image type in the world just fine... except
the google one.

and i'm sure it's a GIF, because static maps by default returns a GIF
image, and that's what my MIME (content-type) is set to: image/gif.

and for the sake of argument, i've tried every other possible mime
type in my php script as well, and none of them work.
so this is clearly something specific to the google static maps API,
and i'd like to know if google or anyone knows why?
