They've changed the FAQ to say
Why do the Google Maps APIs Geocoders provide different locations
than Google Maps?
The API geocoder and Google Maps geocoder sometimes use different
data sets (depending on the country).
So I suspect that using maps.google.<country> may still produce
different results. And, of course, maps.google.com can still geocode UK
postcodes.
A quick check seems to show that geocoding with the API with no base
country code now produces the same results in the API and in
maps.google.com for the USA and Canada.
