As long as  getQueryVariable()  returns a number, there's nothing in the 
code that you posted that causes a problem. Your problem lies in one of 
the parts of your code that you didn't post.

It's actually a bit of a waste to create your map twice. It doesn't 
actually cause any problems these days, because creating it the second 
time destroys the first map.

I recommend that you try following the posting guidelines if you want 
more help.
