I'm new to Maps and Earth. I need help answering some basic questions
about mapping before I embark on a project I am thinking of
developing.

1. What are the dimensions (length and width, in metric) of the world
when it's laid out as a 2D map?

2. Using Google Maps, is there a way to lay a grid on top of the map
that adjusts according to zoom level? (For example, place a 1000x1000
grid on top of the map; each cell size will be bigger with more zoom,
smaller with less zoom.)

3. Is there a way to capture a user selected cell from the grid
mentioned in #2 (e.g. in response to a click event)?

Also, the area covered by the cell in the grid mentioned in #2 (in
terms of latitude and longitude) on a 2D map matches the area covered
on Google Earth, right? Does anyone have any links to any good
tutorial on how a sphere is laid out into a 2D plane?
