Found the problem.
There were 2 folders on my web server - one called images/Icons the
other images/icons.
My FTP programme (used to upload the .png file with transparent
background) could only see the images/Icons folder
BUT the Java script was reading images/icons - which had the white
backgound.
Only my CPanel could see both folders.
