I have abandoned the standard map API for the same reason - excessive
bloat - too much crap I will never use.
Look at:

Click the map to center it. Click the "Layer" radio buttons to change
the map layer. Click "Level" radio buttons to change the zoom level.
The map uses a WMS overlay from the USGS for demonstration purposes.
I am working on the ability to overlay custom tiles. I am also
planning to add dynamic markers to static maps. Polys could be
implemented using Google's "mld" image server except for TOU
limitations.
