I've suggested this functionality be exposed here: http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=318 which you should definitly star ;)
At the moment it seems very closely tied to Googles infeststructure, eg if you enable multiple layers the server actully returns all the layers in one image. (If I am reading the code right) But at the end of the day if you really want it there is nothing stopping you implementing a very similar system, look for the work of John Coryat on this.
