I find the load time and performance on your page quite acceptable
(using Mac Safari)
using lite variety icons might be right up your alley (but I  like the
shadows) Pamela made a post about
a MarkerLight class and to go a step further you could drop down to
icons that are just
small colored divs (example in the BDCC code set)

only showing a single class of items on start up say grottoes... then
loading
others on user demand might be a strategy.

going all out and converting to tiled overlays doesnt seem needed
but is the ultimate speed up (then doing get feature info style
requests
at the time that they click on the map) you wouldnt easily
have your showing the paths on mouseover that way though.
