The maps API has problems with large KML files. Around 1 MB or so, and you will notice a slowdown in loading. So you can try making your kml files smaller - they often contain a lot of stuff not necessary for the display you are interested in. One thing in particular that can help a lot is the number of significant digits in the coordinate values - 6 is all you need.
Another idea that might work better for you is to download ESRI's ArcGIS Explorer. It is a free application similar to Google Earth. It handles KML files and has a measurement tools feature.
