Well thanks. But credits go to marcelo for his help :-) For cross domain use the "On Demand Javascript"-aproach is awesome. However, one drawback is that you don't receive a response code like the one you get with GDownloadUrl. Here you just have to sit and wait until (some predefined) time is up before you can decide to display an error message or whatever you want to do in this case.
