Spot on! I hunted high and low thinking that this must be documented
somewhere but modularization was not something that sprang to mind
given the nature of the problem. I don't often look at the page that
caused the problem and no-one reported the problem to me, hence it
going unnoticed for nearly 3 months!

I see that the solutions proposed in the link you provided are similar
to those that I have adopted, so I'll stick with the code I have used
to get around the problem. However, I like the construct of the
recursive function call with setTimeout in the suggestion, so I may
modify my code next time I'm having a hack at it.

BTW - The tutorial site is excellent and I would recommend anyone to
go there as one of the best ways to get to grips with the Google Maps
API - it taught me a great deal.
