Well basically Mike has arranged his markers into categories which
aren't all visible at once.
Your page opens with a wide view displaying all 2,000 uncategorized
markers at once.

As already advised, you might want to look into a clusterer - at the
wide view, many of your markers are overlapped and superimposed.  A
clusterer will replace those with a single (special) marker, which can
'explode' into its individual marker part as the user zooms in.
This will require some skills, you have to tell it what to do and
when.

Good 'oops' catch on Mike's example page btw, I must now go and check
some of my older creations .... :O
