You do sort of imply that the compatibility mode will continue to
work:
(from the upgrade guide):
+ Version 2 of the Maps API is designed to be 99% backwards-compatible
with the
+ previous version of the API.

This change breaks that compatibility.  While I agree that it makes
sense to have upgraded by now, the document implies that you don't
have to (and you didn't have to before this issue happened).
