Maybe this could be reported as an issue... If you have a map and are zoomed in to a high level with say Satellite map type, and then change to another map type (Map or Hybrid) then the API will change to the new map type at the new map type's maximum resolution rather than changing to the new map type at a non-existent (too high) zoom level.
If the Earth plugin did the same then your problem would be solved. Martin.
