The maximum length of the static map URL depends on the browser,
proxies and web servers in the request path. If you search this group
for "length of static maps URL" your will get some good discussions on
the subject. The essence is that you can not rely on any request
longer than 2048 characters (IE).

You may need to use the Javascript Maps API, but even there you
shouldn't be placing more than about 200-300 markers because of
performance reasons. There are various ways of getting around this for
which you can search on this discussion group. e.g. "large numbers of
markers"
