I seem to remember there being a list available somewhere within
maps.google.com, but it doesn't seem to be there now. It looks like the
Google Local Business Centres now allow businesses to type in anything
into the categories fields, so anything might work. They now seem to
work more like keywords than categories.

"bars" and "pubs" seem to me more likely to work than "bar" and "pub".

Some old country-specific categories that got imported from the original
data sources are:

  UK     category: "Public Houses, Bars & Inns"
  USA    category: "Bar & Grills"
  USA    category: "Beer Taverns"
