I don't think you can, you get what Google gives you.
You could try asking in the Google Maps group -
    http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Maps

This group here IS about an alternative approach that can do what you
want, using the maps API to write your own tailored map pages.  It's
quite a step on from using the ready-made Google Maps though.
