I'd never really noticed it before, and the documentation doesn't draw
much attention to it, but the "Hello World" example in the documentation
does have the line
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"/>
IF: you don't have that line
AND: your browser is MSIE
AND: your browser language preference, or the &hl setting in the code,
is one that requires utf-8 characters
THEN: the utf-8 characters display incorrectly.
Here's a simple example that uses &hl=de when it loads the code.
http://econym.org.uk/temp/test_de.htm
To see the effect on Neil's original page you need to set your MSIE
language preference to German(de) and go to
http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/whatson/maps/
Pamela: It would be a good idea to specify the requirement for the
<meta> tag more clearly in the documentation.
