One way is to get directions from the point clicked, back to itself. GDirections will snap to roads, so if the final point is more than a certain tolerance from the clicked point, you can say it wasn't in a road. Bear in mind that maps are simply graphical representations of reality, and roads are nowhere near as wide as they are shown on a map!
