The validator gave this doctype error because there where some special
characters in the HTML it did not like i.e. "é". I removed those and
now the validator can check the file (lots of errors there, but no
clues).

THe IE problem still remains however....


You might try making the html validate:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.citynumbers.com%2F...

Although at a quick glance I don't see anything that would cause
problems.

It does look like you have whitespace before the DOCTYPE specification
which may put IE in quirks mode.
