With 2 files requests of 2.5 MB each, you're not giving yourself much chance. Even on a 1.5 Mb connection, it is still taking a long time. You can cut the time in half by not loading the same file twice! I haven't looked at the code to find out where they are requested, but my network stats tell me they are being requested twice!
May be you should look at preprocessing the file to different resolutions for different zoom levels, essentially cutting your own set of overlay files.
