Follow the tutorial at http://econym.org.uk/gmap/ -- begin at "The Basics: Part 1" which will start you off in the right direction, using a helper function to create your markers. You do need to use the right terminology if you are to make yourself clear. The paddle-shaped red things are called "markers", and the image they use is an "icon". The yellow balloons are "infoWindows". The word "pointer" is potentially ambiguous.
