Read anything and every thing that mike writes and his site. Other good news with joomla and sobi2 you can connect to maps and set up a directory very quickly that displays maps. With CSS and php knowledge you can tweak the looks a lot. I do not know PHP but have been able to stumble my way through it. There are sample sites for Sobi2 and I just did one and it worked out pretty well. Combine that with knowledge from mike's site and you will be all set. You can load data to the site after geocoding from a CSV file
