I think the point is then could just add "*.maps.google.com" as a rule But actully that wont always work that well from a technical point of view. A common reason to use alternative subdomains is to avoid cookie clutter - subdomains of the main domain would share cookies (in many cases) but you want to avoid cookies on static content - as it hinders caching. (admittedly Google doesnt seem to use that - the tile servers still have some cookies). It also can make DNS more complicated, nesesitating extra lookups. (unless your closest server already has records cached).
