I solved my personal issues with this gadget by covering up the links with css 
based boxes the same or slightly larger that the offending links.  On the link 
above the box, I have even entered some directions of my own to the user on 
what they need to enter in the "From" field.

Les, the "add this gadget to your site" link is part of the gadget, and so it 
can't be removed if you're adding the "Directions by Google Maps" gadget to 
your own page.  The intent is that other webmasters who see it on your site can 
learn about it gadget and add it to their own.

I agree that the presentation isn't ideal-I'd prefer that the "+Google" button 
below the gadget was replaced with a link to the syndication page for 
syndicated gadgets such as this-I think that would be more useful and intuitive 
than linking to iGoogle (especially for a gadget designed for syndication), and 
we wouldn't need the additional "add this gadget to your site" link.  
Unfortunately, that button and the text that appear "below" the gadget's box 
are not editable by the gadget developer.
