Because you need to specify the country. There's no easy way of doing
that like there is with GClientGeocoder.

You could use
directions.load("from: "+startAddr+" uk to: 200 Piccadilly London UK",
{locale:"en_GB"})
to ensure that "UK" is included in the start address, but that could
cause problems if your users have done that already by themselves.
