If you only have limited knowledge about the Google Maps API I would
recommend that you read the API Concepts pages:
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/index.html and some of
the examples etc referred to on there. Then you should look at some of
the basic examples in Mike Williams' tutorials: http://econym.org.uk/gmap/

When you feel confidant about putting a map on a web page and placing
some markers, then search through these discussion pages to see how
other people have handle placing markers from GPS co-ordinates (and
the traps they have encountered on the way). e.g. if you search for
'plotting GPS' you will get the following:
