You should be able to use any format that your browser supports. In 
order to work in all supported browsers, you should probably use only 
GIF, PNG or JPG.

The API just wraps the image filename in an <img> tag and gives it to 
the browser. [Except if the browser is MSIE and the filename extension 
is .png, when the API tells MSIE to use the AlphaImageLoader.]

I can't see any advantage to using JPG. PNG has the advantage of 
supporting partial transparency. GIF has the advantage of supporting 
animations.
