Clients are accessing the pages from the Internet, and come in via the F5. I am not sure what you mean when you say "depends on whatever window.location.host returns for the page where the map is displayed". Is there a simple way to test this? I am not the developer of the code, rather the engineer assigned to fix the issue, so forgive me ignorance.
