I would suggest you try and set an Icon.imageMap as described in the custom icon tutorial on http://econym.org.uk/gmap/custom.htm
Otherwise you might have to try setting the z-index value of the markers to put your square ones over the top of the arrows - do a search on the discussion group to find out a few ways to do this!
