And search is possible, if you have some rules to download posting to a local store. You'll obviously not find things, you haven't on your hd, but for search, I admit, the web client has some advantages. For reading and posting, Thunderbird is the best.
But it will soon not be possible any longer to follow these group with a mailer. Google has already changed some local european groups to a new "look and feel". You can't any longer subscribe to these groups with "full mail support".
