Well, that was it, as Andrew described.
We're not going to make you use it if you don't like it.

It's not a Google Maps API problem, it's just the way browsers of all
kinds work. If you'd like another solution you could use Google's well
known search engine and look at some of these -
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=refresh+cached+xml&meta=

It is possible to make changes at the server end to see that the XML
doesn't get cached, but that's usually only sensible if you are
creating the XML dynamicly
