(which uses http://wheresthepath.googlepages.com/cSnapToRoute.js)
quicker. Use the js library to find the nearest point on the line,
then the Maps API to get the distance between your point and the point
on the line.

I seem to remember that Bjorn Brala has put this up as a community
source project somewhere.
