I think you will find the demo here http://wheresthepath.googlepages.com/cSnapToRouteDemo.html (which uses http://wheresthepath.googlepages.com/cSnapToRoute.js) quicker. Use the js library to find the nearest point on the line, then the Maps API to get the distance between your point and the point on the line.
