Thanks a lot for your response Rossko, so the kml file has to be
publicly available?  Is there a configuration setting to make that
happen within the kml file? Or I am guesssing it's partly integrated
from my web server, which could be a reason why when I tried to refer
to the example file on my api map as well, it wasn't showing up.
