FYI - I did. Coordinates are not needed to construct them map, as in
the example provided, the URL 
http://maps.google.com/maps?output=html&q=heathrow+airport,+london,+UK
is a local search, there are no coordinates needed to generate the
static map. And it works great, and fast, as it was designed.

I had tried a number of searches before posting, but hadn't seen this.
You're right, that is a helpful start, i'll see what I can do with
