Haha, I had a different version remotely and locally.  For some reason
my local version with a panMap as you describe was still showing
(0,0), no matter what the parameters I passed it were. Maybe the cache
was storing the old .js?  Thanks for the suggestions.

If you don't mind could you figure out why the ground overlay, the
antique map, isn't showing on the smaller maps?
