You need to geocode your start point and then use that geocode in the driving directions. See http://econym.org.uk/gmap/didyoumean.htm I've used this and can provide a couple of live examples but they are buried in complex pages and not for the faint-hearted. "kapiolani park" can be geocoded, and there are no alternatives, so I'm not sure why the driving directions fail. Different geocoders, I suppose.
