I have a top map, and a bottom map, so every refresh is 2 maps. Every time the page refreshes for any reason, it reloads the maps (TOS says we can't buffer them!) On pages with the ad banner, it shortens the map by that much. Plus, it's easy to refresh several times a minute when you are trying to zoom in or zoom out one level at a time, or panning left or right to get somewhere... Yeah, it would be better to use the regular maps API for that, but my platform has very limited Javascript support, which is why there is a reason for my app in the first place. But yeah, giving it a rest helped a lot.
