'gdir' IS indeed declared - within the local scope of your findDirection() function. When findDirection() has completed, that 'gdir' vanishes. When exactroute() is called later, it tries to put a listener on the non-existant 'gdir'. http://econym.org.uk/gmap/scope.htm I can't see anywhere in your code that calls function newRoute() so that will never fail.
