I've looked at the elabel solution and it's great, but unfortunatly it
resides inside the map (you add it as a control) and it uses the
mercator calculations to calculate the x+y from the maps 0,0 not the
screens x,y co-ordinates so I don't think it would be appropriate as
the main thing I want to be able to do is to overlay on top of the
google map control and have content outside of the google map control.

For an example, it's very similar to 
http://www.trulia.com/CA/Beverly_Hills/90210/
when you click on an icon on the right.  When it opens the overlay,
the map dosen't pan even though it's narrow.

I have looked at the source but can't figure out how they do it.
