Marcelo: Since you brought it up. I didn't post a link because my question has nothing to do with a specific implementation or debugging issue (in the suggested posting guidelines, that's the whole rationale for linking to a map implementation). It's a theoretical question, and posting a link to my map would only serve to demonstrate that, yes indeed, eShapes was written under the assumption that the Earth is spherical - something that's not in need of demonstration. I was actually originally going to just email Mike directly. However, in hopes that this thread might be of use to someone in the future with a similar issue, I decided to post here for posterity. I only respond to your comment in order to make this suggestion: While I certainly understand your potential frustration with posters who might request help solving a coding problem and yet fail to include a link to the actual problem, perhaps in the future it would be prudent to consider the nature of the question before responding in fashion with an overly- generalized interpretation of the posting guidelines? (More pointedly, passively dismissive phrases like "the least you could do..." certainly don't encourage new community members to participate in discussion or improve their abilities via questions.)
