Rob, I'm from Australia too, Melbourne. ;-)
Just to get things clear I do not generate all tiles on all zoom levels, only those that actually have some data on them (that's pretty easy to identify before tile generation fires up). The good thing is that amount of data I have allows me to pregenerate all tiles and then serve them as a static content. Good luck!
